For anyone that is unfamiliar with Dougie MacLean, Dougie is a Scottish singer-songwriter from Perthshire who has been captivating audiences with his music for the past 5 decades. Dougie started his musical journey at a young age, learning to play the fiddle and guitar. His father played the fiddle and his mother played and taught the melodion.

  • Q. What do you remember most about growing up in Perthshire and the influence it had on you as an artist?

  • A. In the 50s and 60s, Dunblane was bubbling with Ceilidhs. Mum and Dad took me, and I was fascinated by it all. All I wanted was to be a drummer! When I got a bit older, I would come into Perth, mainly to The Sally, to watch the Irish Showbands and do a bit of dancing! Tayside Hotel in Stanley was another favourite. It was good times.

Over the years, Dougie has become one of Scotland’s most beloved musicians, known for his poignant lyrics and soulful melodies. His song “Caledonia” has become an anthem for Scotland and is often referred to as Scotland’s unofficial national anthem.

Throughout his career, Dougie has released over 20 albums, including “Singing Land,” “The Essential Dougie MacLean,” and “Perthshire Amber.” His music has touched the hearts of people all around the world, with fans from as far as Canada, Australia, and the United States.

  • Q. You have released 30 studio albums and only 1 live album. Your music is very intimate, do you feel more comfortable in a studio?

  • A. I remember singing for my grandpa. He lived with us and spoke Gaelic. I have these early memories of being in the kitchen with him when the Birnam Highland Games were on. Tears running down his face. It is very intimate. I love painting a picture in a studio. I became a performer by necessity. It wasn’t something that came naturally to me. But I had to perform so people could hear my music!

Dougie’s music is like a warm embrace on a cold day. His soothing melodies and heartfelt lyrics transport you to a place of tranquillity and peace. Each song is like a story, weaving together elements of folk, traditional Scottish music, and heartfelt emotion. Dougie’s voice is rich and soulful, drawing you in and making you feel every word he sings. Whether you’re listening to one of his classic hits like “The Gael” or discovering a new favourite, Dougie’s music is a true treasure that will touch your heart and soul.

  • Q. In my opinion, Caledonia should be our national anthem. It evokes a sense of belonging to Scotland I don’t get with Flower of Scotland. I want to believe that you were in some distant land, pining for Scotland when you wrote this? Tell me this is true?

  • A. I was busking in Stuttgart, and I hooked up with 3 buskers from Belfast. We ended up travelling Europe, busking until we had enough money for beer, food and the train fare to the next destination. We were in Britanny, in France and I had been working on Caledonia whilst travelling, Anyway, it was about 4am when I finished the last verse, and I gathered them round and played it for them. It was a special moment and it pulled on the heartstrings. The next day we were all packed up, and on our way home!

  • Q. Did you realise straight away that you had written something special?

  • A. No. It wasn’t until I first played it to a live audience. I was in Berlin, and the German audience loved it! They showed huge appreciation for it.

In celebration of Dougie MacLean’s 50 years in the music industry, fans and fellow musicians alike have come together to honour his incredible career. In Perthshire, where Dougie calls home, a special concert has been organised featuring some of Scotland’s top musicians to pay tribute to this legendary artist.

  • Q. This is going to be a special night for you and Jenny. What can we expect?

  • A. Some musical friends are joining me on stage, and I am looking forward to taking you on a wee journey. No big surprises, just a proper tribute to the music that has given me so much joy over the years.

  • Q. Last year, you were the Chieftain at the Perth Highland Games. Will you and Jenny be back this year in a less formal capacity to enjoy the European Pipe Band Championships?

  • A. I need to check the dates, but if we can be there, we will be. No feather in my cap this year though.
